David Khorram
The opportunity to share experience with younger people
David Khorram, MD, is an award-winning physician, writer, and educator. He is the Director of the Division of Global Ophthalmology at University of Virginia. The focus of his career has been to develop eye care in the South Pacific, primarily on the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands, where he lived with his family for over 20 years and where he co-founded Marianas Eye Institute, for which he continues to serve as Medical Director. Currently living in Portugal, he is active in global ophthalmology, traveling across the continents to provide direct care, capacity building, and health system strengthening in challenging and complex circumstances. In addition, he is the creator of the Global Medicine Field Course, taking undergraduate and graduate students to low income countries to consider issues of healthcare, economic justice, and social progress. He hosts the podcast, Global Health Warriors.
Dr. Khorram and his wife are the founders of Brilliant Star Montessori School, a non-profit school on the island of Saipan. He serves on the Boards of the Mona Foundation, Vision Health International, and Partners in Andean Community Health, and is also an affiliated ophthalmologist with the Himalayan Cataract Project. He currently serves as an observer to the Board of Directors of Silver Bullet Therapeutics, a Silicon Valley company focused on reducing infections from surgical devices.
Dr. Khorram is the author of "Diabetic Eye Disease: An easy to understand guide to keeping your vision for people with diabetes," (2013, 2018) and "World Peace, a Blind Wife, and Gecko Tails: Intriguing thoughts from an island on living happier and healthier, and laughing along the way" (2007). He has been a columnist for Ocular Surgery News, focusing on Global Ophthalmology.
In addition to being listed in "Guide to America's Top Ophthalmologists", Dr. Khorram is a member of the European Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists.
