Every evening when the
night
falls, I look back on whatever I have been doing and I ask myself if
whatever it was contributed to making the world a better place? Most of
the time I must admit – it didn’t – but this reflection helps me
I had been doing all kinds of things over the years and in 2004 I kind of rolled into a situation where I felt I needed to change my strategy. It was at this moment that I needed - whatever it was that I was doing - to be meaningful.
So I changed jobs and started working for a non-profit organisation advising boards and management as to how to communicate with their employees and their customers.
Then in 2006 I worked on an interim basis for a large energy company managing a change process within one of their subsidiaries which needed this in order to survive. It was a harsh management task, but through a cultural change process, we were able to turn the liabilities into opportunities and it became profitable again and grew.
In retrospect, I realise this was all about giving people new meaning to their lives and much of what I learned at EBBF helped me to help others find
meaning within their lives and work in this often difficult situation.
And then for 18 months I started preparing to launch my own business - BAS. What we do on a daily basis is help our customers become less dependent on fossil fuels. We help them save energy - and therefore money - which is then reinvested in a sustainable energy strategy.
Every evening when the night falls, I look back on whatever I have been doing and I ask myself if whatever it was contributed to making the world a better place? Most of the time I must admit – it didn’t – but this reflection helps me.
Within BAS we’ve actually embedded this reflection process in our company culture. We find it helps us find the energy to achieve our goals. We have a weekly consultation with the whole company (10 people) looking back at the previous week and looking forward to the next. I also have a one to one meeting with each employee every week.
