EBBF - AIESEC and sustainability on the shores of Lake Ohrid

Submitted by Arthur Dahl

The AIESEC EuroCo in Struga, Macedonia, 16-22 October, held on the shores of Lake Ohrid saw 170 participants from 30 European countries, reaching as far east as Kazakhstan.

On Wednesday 18 October a part was titled "The world around us - what's going on?" intended to set AIESEC activity in a larger context. It began with four workshops of 35-50 people each on the topics:

Sustainable Development (Ms. Katerina Vasileska, EBBF)
Current Trends in CEE (Mr. Gregory Dahl, EBBF)
Education in a Multi-Cultural Environment (Arthur Dahl, EBBF)
Entrepreneurship (Ms. Ines Djuric, AIESEC)

In the evening, each workshop reported back to the plenary, followed by a closing keynote which I gave, describing some challenging examples of what is going on, including economic issues like the rise of China and India, the transformation in CEE, the potential economic vulnerabilities in the US and Chinese economies, the difficulties of social globalization, and environmental challenges including climate change and energy. These suggested the need for a new value-based entrepreneurship, not just to make money, but to put the economy on new ethical foundations and to find solutions for the problems threatening humanity. Since the workshop reports took too long, I had to cut out major parts of my presentation, but there was still a prolonged standing ovation.

As usual, the organization of the conference was excellent, the young people fantastic, and the opportunities for informal exchange very stimulating. I could get addicted to an "AIESEC high".

Catie Thorburn is awarded the honour of being one of the 2006 European Women of Achievement.

Another individual that we are fortunate to have as an EBBF member is Catie Thorburn based in Brussels, from Scotland originally.
She was asked to give her opinion on the proposal that was mooted in Strasbourg in the last session of the European Union about there being a Commissioner for Child’s Rights, she gave it and you can read the full article on the European Voice (download the article).

“I think it’s the parents who are often the problem and the lack of ethics and values in society.”

Catie was interviewed during the ceremony that saw her receiving the 2006 European Women of Achievement Awards.
She was rewarded for her role as Founder and President of Generation Europe, driving forward this association that She links 28 EU and EU candidate countries by speaking directly to the youth of each country in their own language through the Generation Europe daily diaries, free of charge to 15-18 year olds, interactive media sites, books for younger children, and teaching training kits making it possible for young people in all countries to communicate from a common knowledge base.

She comments how “Generation Europe is going from strength to strength and has just signed a framework contract for 4 years to potentially produce 5 million student diaries and teacher’s guides per year in all member states (probably including Romania and Bulgaria). We have also relaunched our - website - and are planning to hold a “Future Leaders” summit in 2007 bringing Europe/Africa/Americas to Brussels together.”

As the organisation progresses she will be tapping into the EBBF membership, as she puts it:

“to reflect with us how we can incorporate speakers and a session on “our” values”.

The YP Forum in New York asks the right questions

Do nice people always finish last in the professional environment?

How much would you compromise your morals to get that big promotion?

How do you navigate the turbulent ethical times we live in?

Do you have the right mentor support system in place at your job to help you deal with these issues?

What are the available resources and channels for giving back to the community…NOW?

A group of young professionals joined to discuss these questions and consult an expert for answers at the Grand Hyatt New York.
On the 26th of October the Young Professionals Forum event  featured Richard Weisman, Senior Partner at Baker and McKenzie, as he presented "Practical Effects of Ethics in One's Career Path: The Personal Experience of a Law Firm Partner."

The Forum is a bi-monthly group discussion facilitated by prominent business, law and community leaders.  Our purpose is to learn how to most effectively apply our skills and experience to make a difference in the world.  Open to all, the Forum is an excellent opportunity to network with like-minded young professionals in a unique setting.
